This was a good solid win today for Raith Ladies against second top United, at a balmy but breezy Windmill Campus. Raith tails were up on the back of their tournament success last weekend, with today giving Raith their 3rd league win in a row.
A steady first half saw the home side dominate, but with few real chances from either side.
A Penman shot from 25 yards out after 20 minutes looked net bound but a fantastic save from the Utd keeper saw it tipped over. Meanwhile at the other end, there was very little to trouble keeper Smith, with defenders Rattray, A. Paterson, Clark and Stewart solidly snuffing out the rare Utd attacks.
It was more of the same in the second half, with Raith taking a well deserved lead after 50 minutes.
Ucer powered down the right wing and crossed for Dinnel, who met the cross perfectly to score. Raith consolidated, and at this stage Moreland, To and Penman were bossing the midfield, creating numerous passes through to the energetic Dinnel and S. Paterson down the wings.
After 65 minutes Dinnel almost got a second when she hammered the ball high towards the top of the net but once again the Utd keeper pulled off a top drawer save to tip the ball over and keep her team in the game (see picture). At the other end Utd had their best chance of the game when their striker was through on goal but a brilliant slide tackle from Clark knocked the ball clear to safety.
After 70 minutes Raith put the game beyond reach, when S. Paterson threaded the ball through to Penman who lobbed the advancing keeper to make it 2-0. With the home side pressing for more, Penman forced a finger tip save from an overhead kick, while a Clark shot from a full 40 yards - memories of her 45 yard internet sensation wonder goal from 3 years ago at Easter Road - sailed past the keeper but cruelly hit the post and was cleared.
So chances galore for Raith, but the girls will be happy to take the 2-0 win and 3 points nonetheless, in what was a very accomplished performance today from every single player.
