Hibernian Ladies reach Scottish Cup Final

Hibernian Ladies secured their place in the SSE Women's Scottish Cup Final after they defeated Heart of Midlothian 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ainslie Park.

Hearts played a high pressing game, which stunted the play of Chris Roberts’ side in the first half, although the lead was still taken into half-time by Hibernian.

Abi Harrison and Rachel McLauchlan both came close to opening the scoring, before the latter did just that ten minutes before the break.

A low cross into the box found McLauchlan, who was on hand to tap into the net from just six yards out.

In the second half, Hibernian did not have to wait long to double their advantage and gain a firmer grip on the proceedings in North Edinburgh.

Cailin Michie was fouled in the box and a penalty was awarded, which Lizzie Arnot coolly slotted into the net just eleven minutes after the restart.

Hibernian continued to be on top and effectively countered the pressing tactics from their opponents, which brought about a further three goals in the closing stages of the match.

76 minutes were on the clock when Sarah Ewens embarked on a great solo run, before she picked out Arnot with a pass and the winger fired the ball into the net through the legs of the goalkeeper.

Ten minutes later and Arnot had completed her hat-trick. She received the ball in the middle of the park before driving towards the box, where the number seven was able to rifle an effort beyond the ‘keeper.

In injury-time, some gloss was added to the scoreline when Ewens smashed the ball into the roof of the net from six yards out, completing the scoring in the match in the process.

Speaking to the Hibernian Ladies Twitter account, Chris Roberts said: “We’re delighted to be through to the Scottish Cup final.

“Hearts, like ourselves, are in the middle of a tough games schedule. They packed the middle of the pitch and looked dangerous going forward.

“Grant Scott has done a great job and we wish Hearts well for the remainder of the season.

“The last two weeks have been very tough for us, but the players have responded brilliantly.”
