2017 Euro Qualifiers Iceland 1-2 Scotland
Laugardalsvöllur, Reykjavik Tuesday 20 September, kick-off 6pm (UK Time)
Iceland: Fanndis Fridriksdóttir (39 mins)
Scotland: Jane Ross (29 mins, 56 mins)
Scotland beat Iceland in the final group match of the qualification campaign, after a Jane Ross double secured the win.
The match was the host’s first loss in the campaign.
Having already booked their spot at the Euros in 2017, Scotland still had a point to prove against a team who defeated them 4-0 in their last encounter earlier this year and have been dominant in all of their games.
Tonight was to be different though with Scotland defending ferociously and neutralising their aerial threat in the box.
Scotland started well and restricted Iceland to very little opportunities but after 29 minutes the visitors, clad in pink, took the lead.
A beautifully floated cross into the box from Emma Mitchell found Jane Ross who diverted her header beyond Gunnarsdóttir. It was the first goal Iceland have conceded in this campaign.
Scotland looked comfortable and were controlling the game but after 39 minutes they let their lead slip.
A cross into the box was hit goal wards by Fridriksdóttir and although Emma Mitchell tried to clear the ball it had already crossed the line.
At the start of the second half Caroline Weir let rip from 25 yards and rattled the upright.
Scotland then took a deserved lead for the second time in the match when Evans was brought down in the box and Jane Ross fired the ball to the left, scoring her second of the game.
Anna Signeul’s team then had to deal with a late onslaught ofIcelandic attacks but held on to secure a famous win that buoyed the group, ahead of their trip to the Euros next summer.
Afterwards, goalscorer Jane Ross said: “We’re really pleased to come here and pick up the three points, to get revenge for that 4-0 defeat in June.
“After that game at home we were really disappointed and didn’t show what we were capable of but today we’ve come here and put in a tremendous performance.
“We can be incredibly proud of ourselves.
“Our focus now is on the Euros and we can prepare for it with confidence, especially after tonight’s result.
“Defensively, from front to back, we were excellent and limited the chances they had. I was obviously happy with the goals but for me I’m more happy about us winning.”
