SWFL2 South West: Renfrew Ladies v Bishopton FCL

Renfrew started with the same side that won against Stranraer last weekend as they welcomed Bishopton to New Western Park.

In three previous games between the sides this season Renfrew had scored 16 goals without reply and went ahead after just 7 minutes when a quick throw from Lindsay Fitzpatrick found Claire Rae in space. She hit the bye line before squaring the ball to Karen Baillie who shot home from inside 6 yards to make it 1-0. Five minutes later the hosts almost doubled their lead when Claire lobbed the Bishopton keeper from the edge of the box but her effort went narrowly past.

She made amends moments after when she found herself in space to shoot low and hard past the keeper to make it 2-0.

With Renfrew enjoying the majority of possession, Claire had another chance on 24 minutes but shot wide after a great ball from Lindsay. Another chance came and went two minutes later when Claire's hopeful cross was fumbled by the keeper. Karen was quickest to react but her header was cleared off the line. Renfrew kept pressing and the next chance fell to Claire.

A long ball from Sam McQuillian in the Renfrew goal, and a great touch from Claire, flicking the ball over the last defender, saw her with a free run on goal but unfortunately she shot straight at the keeper. With three minutes until the break, another long clearance from Sam saw Karen hold off a defender and fire home an unstoppable shot to make it 3-0, before she turned provider to give Gail Hawthorn a chance, but her effort from 6 yards missed the target.

Renfrew did get their fourth of the half when Lindsay's quick throw-in found Lee Rossi on the move. Her cut back found Karen who slotted home to complete her hat trick and give Renfrew a 4-0 lead at the break.

Renfrew were quick out of blocks in the 2nd period as Claire's flick found Karen who beat the last defender for pace but unfortunately hit the post. Another chance came and went before the visitors had their first sight on goal, however the shot from distance didn't trouble 'keeper Sam. Their first corner of game followed but was cleared, before Karen's shot from edge of box struck the crossbar.

On 52 minutes a great passing move between Lee and Jane Murphy led to Erin Gould crossing but Gail shot wide. It was Erin's last involvement as she was replaced by Natalie O'Neil. Her first run and cross was cleared only as far as Janice McIntyre, but Renfrew's captain had her shot from outside box, turned onto the post. Sian Francis and Sammy Jo Smith replaced Gail and Karen before Bishopton has a chance from a breakaway, but it came to nothing as a forward strayed offside.

In 64 minutes Sammy's shot from edge of box was turned over for corner, but it only delayed the inevitable as Claire slotted home from Natalie's cross to make it 5-0. Shortly after Sian got in on the act to make it 6-0, after she beat the keeper after a neat one two with Claire. Lee then had an incredible effort as she struck a left foot volley which was touched over for corner. With only two minutes remaining Renfrew sensed another goal coming and Sian forced a fine save before Sammy found space on the left wing to cross for the same player to get her 2nd and Renfrew's 7th and final goal.

It was a great all round performance from Renfrew Ladies today with Karen the pick of the bunch with her hat trick. There was another couple of goals from Sian coming off the bench plus a couple from Claire, as well as a great assist for Sian's opener.

With 2nd place Ayr Utd winning at Dumbarton, next weeks game with Renfrew takes on added importance. Anything but a win for Ayr will see Renfrew win a first league title. It should be a cracker.
