SWFL2 SW: Ayr Ladies make history with first SWFL victory

March 28, 2016

Ayr United Ladies were back in league action on Easter Sunday, looking to bounce back from a 92nd minute League Cup exit the week before against East Fife Violets.

History was made by the ladies as they grabbed their first competitive SWFL2 league victory with the win over Bishopton Ladies thanks to a double from Scott and another from Tamara Sommers.

The ladies made the trip to Drunchapel for their away fixture against Bishopton Ladies with the team determined to get back on track and at the same time, bag their first competitive league win into the bargain. Ayr started the brighter out of the two teams and had the Bishopton defence pinned back from the offset.

Scott and Dodsworth went close to opening the scoring early on as Ayr were demonstrating pinpoint passing in all areas of the park. As a result a great chance fell to Duthie in front of goal but her final strike headed just wide of target.

The deadlock was eventually broken when a clever throw-in from Tamara Sommers (pictured) brought Scott into play, as she then neatly curved the ball around the on-coming Bishopton goalkeeper, giving the Honest Lassies a well-deserved 1-goal lead.

Ayr then started to lose their composure slightly after going in front with Bishopton beginning to cause a few anxious moments in the Ayr defence, but they held strong to see the half out with the 1-goal advantage.

Ayr came out of the traps in the second half in the same manner as they started the first by consistently piling the pressure onto the home defence. The first chance of the second period came as Barbour found herself with an opportunity in front of goal after some expert passing between Cairns and Sommers in the middle of the park, but she just couldn’t get enough power on the ball.

This was a clear sign of intent though as Ayr’s second goal of the game arrived just minutes later after a perfectly weighted pass from Miren Babaske-Kerr fell directly into the path of Scott, who rounded the keeper to score her second of the game.

This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Bishopton as Ayr maintained possession of the ball and full control of the game. With five minutes left on the clock, the ball fell to Sommers, twenty five yards out, as she then looked up to spot the opposition goalkeeper keeper off her line, to dink a delightful lob over the stranded keeper ending the game 3-0 in favour of the Ayr United Ladies.

Head Coach David Danaher stated:

"The girls were excellent today, it was a real team effort, with everyone playing for each other. A massive result for the girls and you can see their confidence growing by the minute.

Saying that, we won't get too carried away, as we still have a lot of work to do and we will work hard to improve."
